wink

(The Phantom of the Opera)》无疑是他最成功的作品之一。 (The Phantom of the Opera)》赏析】。

Mark & Trish's
Dining in Boston

----------------------------------------------------

Weylu's Palace

Route 1 North, Saugus, MA (781) 231-5201 (2/97)

The story of Weylu's is legendary in Boston, how owner Rick Chang nearly lost his empire building his jewel-in-the-crown on a hilltop in Saugus. Now one of only two remaining Weylu's locations, the Saugus restaurant is billed as the nation's largest and is certainly one of the most opulent.

Food-wise, Weylu's also houses Midori, a Japanese steak house and sushi bar, and has experimented with a restaurant-within-a-restaurant concept with its Thai and noodle shop menus. Even the regular Chinese menu is vast; you could probably eat here every day for a year and not be able to try every dish.

That said, the menu is somewhat on the conservative side, though it's hard to blame them when most of the diners there are looking for nothing more challenging than pork fried rice and moo goo gai pan. Weylu's does serve some very fancy dishes, but there's almost nothing in the way of lamb or squid on the menu, not to mention any of the real delicacies served up in any restaurant in Chinatown.

We've had some good meals at Weylu's and also some that were pretty mediocre, including the $50 a head Chefs of China banquet back in '95, but the finest we've had was undoubtedly the one we had in celebration of Chinese New Year 1996.

For appetizers, we ordered the Peking dumplings [$4.95], pan-fried and with a thin and delicate skin rather than thick and doughy, and the scallion pancake [$3.25], crisp and tasty. The soy-based dipping sauce was spiced up nicely with the addition of a dried chili pepper.

For our next course, we went with the Peking duck [half $16, whole $30], served in the traditional style with hoisin sauce, scallions, and Mandarin pancakes. The meat was moist and tender, while the skin was crisp, without being the slightest bit fatty or greasy. Thoroughly first-rate.

Next, we had the steamed whole fish [market price, in this case $18.95], a sea bass steamed with ginger, scallions, and wine. The preparation here was excellent, but the fish was not as fresh as it could have been, its flavor more dull than delicate. Also, the fish had been improperly cleaned, as portions of the flesh had a noticeable bitter bile taste. While this dish was not all it could have been, it didn't miss the mark by enough to dampen our spirits.

Even the Tsing Tao (Chinese beer) was as fresh as we've ever tasted, clean and crisp, without any hint of the off-flavors an imported beer can pick up due to improper shipping and storage.

We were hoping Weylu's could recapture that glory to welcome in the year of the ox, but it was not to be.

It was probably the service that did the meal in, as much as anything. Though our waitress was friendly enough, she was never around when we needed her, and the dishes were not paced evenly, causing us to rush when the food began piling up faster than we could eat it. And Mark never did get his second beer. (The first wasn't all that fresh, anyway.)

The Peking duck was once again excellent, but it arrived before our appetizer and without the requisite hoisin sauce. The shrimp toast finally arrived when we were halfway through the duck, followed quickly by the steamed fish and the black mushrooms and bok choy hearts. It might have been a pretty good meal, but as most of the food was cold before we could eat it, it was really hard to tell.

Weylu's is a restaurant that is capable of greatness. Unfortunately, it seldom delivers. (ML/PS)

smile
