Mot:

There is no doubt that you are very talented at grand view photography. I feel very frustrated everytime after I look at my work.
Maybe, you should give me some suggestions.

Here are examples. Pics were PS adjusted.

Compared with shutterbug's work. I am so surprised that the effects are so much different. I don't think the light a major factor, although I did notice that the light changing was very complex when I shot these pics. Could it be my metering system?

coler98:

For the 1st picture, I think the image is too hazy and if I were you, I wouldn't take photos at all in that situation. Also, the pile of boulders look ugly in the frame.

For the 2nd picture, the evergreen trees are so unharmonious in other trees and I would rather choose a different view point. In addition, the tree closer look clear and colors are good but the tree farther away look very blurred. This contrast doesn't help you create any desired mood. If I were you, I would choose either the trees farther away or the trees closer but never the both.

It seems that most of the time, you always try to shoot "grand view" pictures but the situation is not always suitable for that kind of photos. You can try to shoot fewer trees to see the result. In fact, I shot very few "grand view" pictures in Acadia. Actually your last posting is a very good example for the view not so "grand" but equally beautiful. Your 70-200 lens will be very useful in this kind of situation. I post your picture here to demonstrate.

One thing I don't understand is that your pictures all look very "soft." I don't think they should be like that. Most of photos of Glacier Park I posted here were taken using a Tamron 17-35/2.8-4.0 lens and it is a lens much less sharp than your 24-70 lens and 70-200 lens. Because I lost a part of my tripod, I handheld the camera to shoot those pictures. Yet my photos look much sharper than yours. Could you exlain the reason?

Mot: thanks for the suggestion.

As for the image quality, I don't understand either why my pics look soft. I have had such a feeling for some times. I have been keeping an eye on all the Canon DSLR pics posted on the web. My general feeling is, it is probably the Canon feature. If you pay attention to the works from shutterbug, whitesand, and others, you will probably have a same conclusion as I have. I don't think this is due to the foucs drifting by such a notorious combination between 10D, 300D and 70 to 200 at all.

I GUESS Canon may somehow acknowledge the issue by setting the default parameter in 300D as +1, +1, +1 for color saturation, sharpness, and contrast.

Another possibility for this issue:

The film image is still better than the digital one in terms of resolution per se. If I remember correct, a good film image can have resolution up to 70 to 80 lines per mm(?), whereas good digital image such as Canon 1D can only reach to 40 to 50 lines. That's why 70-200 has better resolution than 70-200 IS on film images but there is no difference on digital ones.
My question is, when you scan your film, what settings do you usually use? does it match the resolution of 300D? Otherwise the comparison will be apple and orange.
