Hiking on this sunday will be very streneous. I don't know if we are strong enough for 3 mountains. (around 10 miles)

The reason:
snow will be deep, and it will be very cold on Sunday. Considering the rain and snow this week, trail may be icy.

Thanks for the info.
I think Greentea meant two peaks, not three. I know that you want to do a longer trail, but for Greentea and me and most others, I think it might be too much, esp. since we don't have much winter hiking experience... oops
So are you still interested?

I am interested, but I have never hiked in winter. What kind of equipment do I need?

Mountains With Views: If you're really wanting to climb a mountain and have a view than let me suggest several of the better "smaller" mountains to try. My list would include, Hedgehog, Potash, Willard and several others. But that gives you a good place to start researching from.

4000 Footers: Ok, so you're really bent on doing a 4000 footer huh? Well if you feel that's what you want to do then let me suggest what I consider to be the two best 4000 footers for newer winter hikers. First is Mount Tecumseh in Waterville Valley. You'll be starting and ending in a ski area, there will be lots of people around and it's only 2.2 miles to the summit. In my opinion it has to be the "safest" 4000 footer to do in winter. The other favorite of mine is Mount Jackson in Crawford Notch. It's just a bit longer than Tecumseh but it actually breaks out of the trees for the last hundred yards or so! There are a couple of steeper pitches near the very top that could possibly require some crampons or some ingenuity to get up but it will give you that big mountain feel for a small mountain effort!

Trail: Mt Jackson/Jackson-Webster loop

Date Hiked: 3/5/05

Conditions: It's a sidewalk now, the whole loop, albeit slippery on some glissade sections, particularly on the trail below the split.

Special Required Equipment: Crampons recommended, but route is barebootable. Strong winds near the top may fill in the track, though, so packing snowshoes wouldn't be a bad idea.

Comments: Mt. Jackson trail was broken out to 3500', at which point the snowshoers evidently u-turned. Three of us bulldozed the deep powder covering the remainder of the trail, including a few sections of 5-foot drifts. A contingent from AMC's Narragansett chapter followed us up, finishing the trail's paving. Top was wind-swept with some ice on bare rock. Wind chill was invigorating, views were extensive.

就这个还差不多,前面的两个rating都是strenuous的,太自虐(要记得这是冬天啊!),Blue Hill又太没劲了.

Great job, peachleaf MM 牛

Thanks for considering my suggestions of Mt. Pierce/Jackson or Mt. Jackson/Webster. I think a 5-7mile trail with 2000-2500ft vertical gain is quite reasonable for most of us. Three-peak traversal (10+mile) would be too much for non-experienced winter hikers or big group. We don't need to push limits.

If the weather isn't cooperative this weekend, we can go later...
Anyway, you make the decision. Whichever trail and whichever day you pick, I'd join you support support support

It is difficult for at least 1/4 to 1/3 of the normal people. The rating for the 2 long trails is all "strenous" in my book (I have a WM hiking book) and I don't recommend them to people seldom hiking, especially in winter.

Cannon Mountain

All three routes up Cannon are short, but they are also steep and rough. One approach is by the Lonesome Lake and Kinsman Ridge trails (rt: 6.2 miles, 2,300 feet, 4:15). A second approach is by the Lonesome Lake, High Cannon and Kinsman Ridge trails (rt: 5.6 miles, 2,300 feet, 3:55). The third approach is from the Tramway parking lot by the Kinsman Ridge Trail (rt: 4.0 miles, 2,100 feet, 3:15).

Trail: Cannon via Kinsman Ridge Trail

Date Hiked: 3/6/06

Conditions: Trail mostly packed snow. If it wasn't before we went, it certainly was after our group of approximately 35-40 passed over it.

Special Required Equipment: Snowshoes and poles.

Comments: This was the final hike for Brutus & I to climb all the NH 4's in one winter season, and we had a huge group for the occasion - perhaps as many as 40! Many thanks to Cath, Jonatha and all the others for the huge summit banner, special tee-shirts and spiffy cake at the tram lodge. And, a thanks to Cannon Mountain Ski Area for tolerating our silliness. I'll post something on the BB within a day or two for the occasion.

My thanks again to all who made this a special day for Brutus and I, and my congrats to Lou Carron who will complete the same goal on Wednesday when he climbs the Tripyamids.

我是不解地问LM, 他说的"就这个还差不多"到底是那个, 因为前面你提到了好几个山头.
别着急,又不是非要这周去. 看今年的架式,4月中能开春就不错. 还有时间.
