What kind of bears live in New Hampshire?
The black bear is the only bear species in New Hampshire. Population estimates are between 4,500 to 5,000 bears statewide.
Are black bears dangerous?
Yes. Black bears are capable of killing people, but it is an extremely rare occurrence. The last time someone was killed by a black bear in New Hampshire was 1784. Campground or "panhandler" bears may nip or cuff people that tease with food or crowd around them. In the woods, black bears usually retreat before people are aware of them; normal trail noise should alert bears to your presence.
What should I do if I encounter a bear?
If you see a bear, keep your distance. Make it aware of your presence by clapping, talking, singing or making other sounds. If you get too close to a bear, it may slap the ground, chomp its teeth or rush you in an attempt to get you to move a more comfortable distance away. If this occurs, slowly back away while keeping the bear in your peripheral vision and speaking in quiet tones. Do not run, and do not stare into the bear's eyes; both of these actions could cause the bear to become more physical. Bears can outrun, out swim and out climb you. If you are attacked by a black bear, you should fight back rather than playing dead.

SANDWICH, N.H. ― A 13-year-old boy attending a camp for underprivileged children collapsed and died after being frightened by a bear during a hike, authorities said Wednesday.
Antonio Hansell of Boston and a counselor from Camp Hale (search) came across the bear twice Tuesday afternoon on Mount Doublehead (search), the state Fish and Game Department said. Officials said the two ran from the bear at the first encounter; they saw the bear a second time while trying to retrieve Antonio's lost sneaker and also ran. The bear did not chase them.
When word reached Fish and Game Sgt. James Goss that Antonio was scared and did not want to continue hiking, Goss spoke to him by cell phone and judged he was having trouble breathing.
The boy collapsed, and was neither breathing nor had a pulse when rescuers reached him about two hours later, a half-mile from the end of their approximately 6-mile hike, the department said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
An autopsy was being conducted Wednesday. Goss said he did not believe the boy had any medical problems.
