In the Memory of Mr. Aso 4/08/2006 14:05

Mr. Aso passed away on March 11th, 2006 after fighting with cancer. Although toward the end of his life, after months of chemo therapy, he was very weak and weighed no more than 60 lbs., he still sat through his watercolor, calligraphy, poetry, and philosophy discussion sessions.

The following are a poem and a haiku written at the end of his life. He has my respect and love. rose

Spirit of February

Dance Dance
between branches
which have no flowers yet

Dance Dance
this tiny spirit
until reaching exhaustion

Dance Dance
to the end of the land
to the end of the world.

- Kaji Aso

Last Haiku

Young boy
chasing the rainbow
he became the rainbow

- Kaji Aso
This is the first time I heard about this painter. His water color is amazing!

牛 牛 牛 Beautiful poem! Title of the poem is "Spirit of February", but it may as well be spirit of a human life well-lived...one of strength, optimism, and perseverance.

Thanks for sharing, Crane.

你们的话让我感动。

Mr. Aso 是我一生中一个非常特殊的人,在于他毕其一生追求“真善美”。他是人,他不完美,但他坚持不懈地追求,他身上所带有的positive energy has touched many people. I am only one of them.

I believe he left in the early March
Just so that he has enough time
to be reborn in the spring.

At the Memorial Serive, I wrote down:
Mr. Aso
are you back yet?
on which flower pedal?

Kaji就是“花儿”。

今天发现了这个电视采访, 看过了几边心里有些感触.

Mr. Aso is a great teacher for the energy and spirituality he could bring out from within each student.

For a long time, I have not visited the studio. I sometimes think that I need to learn from other teachers in order to grow in art and that it may not do good if I stay in one place too long. What I realize is that other teachers may be great artists technically, Mr. Aso has been the only one who could lift one's spirituality. I can feel that the spirituality has been leaving me and I am too entangled unnecessarily.

I feel the urgency to visit the studio, the fish pond where I could communicate with his spirit. For many years in my lonely and difficult times, the studio and the pond in the garden was where I could find inner peace, find my true self and where I had found inspiration.

Also I have not pledged to the studio this year. Next week, I will pay a visit and give the long over-due donation to the studio, and I will stay in the garden alone a whole evening to reach my spirit by connecting with his.

He is the man who made me run my first marathon and made me believe that I could do things that I had thought impossible. He is a man of persistence and I have been and I am still very bad on this. But he made me realize that it will make difference in a long run if one persists on small things.

As this short interview says, Mr. Aso is a man "who doesn't waste a moment of living". I have been wasting my time that requires change. I used my leg pain as an excuse but Mr. Aso stayed in his class when he became so weak. Sometimes, I truly wonder where he got his strong spiritual power from? We all got from him but where he got his?

This will be the question I will try to ask next week when I visit the studio and try to communicate with his spirit in heaven. He may have more messages waiting for me.
