There are a number of factors which can affect our effective communication. People do not understand us not just because our pronunciation of English word is not standard; there are other reasons. Based on my experience, voice projection is extremely important in effective communication.

What is voice projection? It is the way you send your voice to your audience. When you talk to others, do not act like you are talking to yourself. Your purpose is to have your voice to be reachable by the person sitting in the last raw of a room or stadium.

How to project your voice effectively?

First, your voice needs to be loud enough. One of my colleagues speaks English with heavy Chinese accent. Sometimes, his pronunciation is not perfect. However, people understand him pretty well because he is aloud. Incorrect pronunciation together with whispering (in teacher’s word: 说小话) will kill your talk.

Second, use more your chest cavity (胸腔) to produce your vice. A voice that creates physical resonance (共鸣) will reach farther and sound more pleasant. In addition, lean forward your upper body a little bit as if you try to shorten the distance between you and your audience.

Third, try to mimic the way politicians talk; However, do not follow the G.W. Bush. Watching channel CSPAN will help.

Wang, you need to improve your pronunciation a lot. Then, others could understand you better.” 读了四年Ph.D, 又做了四年 Post-Doc, Seminar 无数次, 以前怎么无人给我讲这个? 刚才别人还夸我 “Nice talk”, 心里美滋滋的, 突然被浇了一头冷水! 不过我知道 Dr. Lau 向来说话直来直去, 也就没有在意.

过几个了月, 又轮到我做 Seminar. 可能是熟了的原因, 这一次, Dr. Lau 更不留情面, “Your English is bad! No body understands you!” 心里想, ”Is it that bad?”

类似 以上的事又发生过几次. 有时, 我的 technicians 也 complain. 实验出了问题, 怪我没有讲清楚. 我开始意识到我的英文发音的确存在严重问题.

一天, 我主动到了 Dr. Lau’s office, 想征求一下他的意见. 我说: “It is a habit for so many years. It might be too late to correct it. ” Dr. Lau 回答 : “No, absolutely not! Even those American movie stars ask specialists to correct their pronunciation”. 最后, 他强烈建议我去看 “speech pathologist”.

我所在大学的 School of Public Health, 设一门课程, “Speech Pathology”. Instructor 是语言学教授, 学生是读 Master degree 的. 学生在教授指导下帮助 “病人” 矫正发音, 一对一.
You should talk singing lessons. Speak from your lower abdomen. Use accents correctly. Speak slow and repeat the important message.
