the traveling blog - day 2 7/14/2008 13:10
Arrived Hong Kong just past 7 pm. It was foggy, cloudy and a little bit raining. Looking out the window, I couldn't see much.

It was my first time to take the Continental. It was model 777, I think, a much smaller airplane comparing to the ones I usually take. I am not sure about the reason but the air circulation was not good - whether because it was a new model or because of the bad economy. It didn't feel as cold as I usually feel, and was apparently hot for other people sitting next to me.

My friend M went to the airport to pick me up and we took the airport express to her place, took the escalators to the peak, and got to her apartment at the 24th level. Her husband works at the world largest law firm and has usually been not home early. But when we arrived, he had already been home making pasta for us. We had dinner together and chatted.

The last time I met her was 7 years ago in Hong Kong. At the time, a book edited by her was just published. In the past two and half year, she quited her editing job at a university and devoted her time to free-lance writing and to write her family history. And it was just done, about 400 pages, full of family trees, and photographs. She flipped through the book with me. It all started from her great-grand father, who was a successful business men and who adventured to the Philipines. He had three wives, and seventeen children, so my friend found all of them, and traveled to the old village, and many parts of the world to write about it. The book is private and is not for publication and therefore i can only say that much, that she invested two years to write the family history like a detective.

It was her father who immigrated to Canada and my friend M immigrated when she was in middle grade. I met her when I was a sophomore in Beijing University. One night, our dorm was full of girls and she was among them. She wanted to make friends and we decided to meet once a week alternatively at our dorm or at her dorm at Yanyuan. So it went a few times and I was secretly waiting for the time that only two of us would show up. Then this evening came, no one else was able to make it, except just two of us. We took a walk around the Weiming lake. She told me excitedly that "you know, I have been waiting for the time just two of us will meet". I told her that's what I thought exactly. So we had hit on each other and became friends since after, although we don't keep contacts for years.

She is a very sensible and intelligent women with fine skin and delicate features. Amazingly, she hasn't changed much with aging, and she is very consistent with her own fashion and even her hairstyle. She enjoys reading, writing and fine arts. So we will head off for the galleries tomorrow.

I am getting very tired but it is raining hard by now. Looking out the window, the lightening among the skyscrapers, reminds me the scenes in Blade Runner - it feels quite post modern, whatever the term means, it just feels that way.

I will meet many people during this trip that I haven't seen for a long time. So it will invevitably bring memories of the past and mingles with the present. I am expecting many bitter-sweet stories and hoping for more sweetness than bitterness.

I can't believe this is my horoscope:

Horoscopes
July 14, 2008
Aries (3/21-4/19)
A foreign person will have a very positive influence in your life today, especially if they are a person from your past. What they have to say is going to surprise you, but you should give them the benefit of any doubt. They are reaching out to you, and it is a very good idea for you to reach right back. Exploring a different culture will be fun when they are your guide, and they are eager to show you things that are familiar to them -- take them up on any invitations they extend to you.

Most of us tend to believe that we are truth lovers. In reality, truth is often hard or at least not easy to take. When Newton in his Opticks explained the phenomenon of rainbow - the refracted light of different wave lengths, the poet John Keats complained later that Newton "destroyed all the poetry of rainbow by reducing it to prismatic colors".

It takes courage to embrace truth which usually leaves no room for further imagination, at least not on the same line, and leaves not much edge for self-deceit. On one hand truth demands courage to face it eye to eye and to give up old dreaming. On the other hand, however, there is no absolute truth that independent of who we are. We interactively create that truth and therefore it is often more important not to lose the ability to dream on or the capability to imagine when a hard truth strucks us. The trick I have learned through years is to give up the old dream in such case quickly and then dream on. wink Life is in 'truth' one dream after another, and never loses imagination and the creative energy in life. rose

Honestly speaking, although I had traveled extensively alone in the past, i have found it is difficult to travel alone now. I increasingly felt panic when I took the air flight alone and have had hard time to fall into sleep in the past few days partly because of the time lag but partly there is this feeling of panic. But panic of what? I am not sure but may be related to a kind of fear of facing the reality or what we like to call 'truth' - a hard truth.

Yesterday, we walked along and visited some local galleries and antique stores. My friend and her husband who is an extremely intelligent person with a very gentle soul (I shall introduce him a little bit more after I have more sleep), have traveled extensively to the south-east Asian countries, and have collected all kinds of art and artifacts. They have collected many ink paintings by Yang Gang and a recently one from Jia Haoyi. There are many Buddhist sculptures made of stone, wood, terra cotta in their apartment. There are also fancily carved furnitures from Tibet, Burma, Nepal and Phillippines etc.

But this mostly happened few years back when everything was cheaper and my friend has not visited the galleries or the antique shops for a long while. So we took a day-stroll. I have no money to collect and I know that much clearly, although often I have been treated as if I am that kind of person who have money to collect in most of the galleries I visited, and I am aware that is simply because how i look at paintings make the experienced and scrupulous art sellers unable to tell. In truth (and talking about truth), I look to learn instead of to buy. Sometimes I tell them the truth so that they can feel free to leave me alone and not to waste their time. Sometimes, I would entertain a little longer and encourage them to think so and often by doing this, I could get more information about the art piece.

I had noticed from my trip seven years ago that what unique about Hong Kong was that it had many antique stores that sell Chinese historic artifacts. This time, the number of anitique stores decreased but still there are some there. The one that my friend brought me to visit 7 years ago "Artmeis" that deals with oriental works of art has existed for 16 years. I am always puzzled about the antiques market in Hong Kong. Many of the stuff they are dealing are considered national treasures. For example, I found a pair of Han Dynasty terre cotta duck-shaped grain containers, that are so elegant and simple in form yet so cute. I would love to have them if i have that kind of money. The pair were authenticated by the Oxford Authentication Ltd. at UK and had a certification number of C19 9t13 and I would like to find out in my spare time more about it.

There were also in their collection the Psittacosaurus of 140-65 million years ago and there were jade and stone carves so resembling apes from
