Ghost Train to the Eastern Star 12/15/2008 20:13

Paul Theroux’s Ghost Train to the Eastern Star,

This 500-page book was published in 2008, Paul’s most recent publication. He is a famous travel writer, which means he travels and writes. He has published many books about his travel and some novels. Ghost Train retraced the itinerary of the Great Railway Bazaar he took 33 years ago when he was 32. He started the trip from London, most of the journey were by trains to Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest (in Romania), Istanbul, Ankara, Trabzon, Hopa (in Turkey), and through many villages, towns, and cities in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. From the boarder of Vietnam and China, he took a train to Kunming, and flew from Kunming to Tokyo. In Japan, he traveled to Sappora and all the way to the northern-most town Wakkanai, and back to Kyoto and Nara. He then flew from Tokyo to Vladivosok in Russia, and took the trans-Siberian Express passing Perm 36, Moscow, Minsk, Warsaw to Berlin, and back to Paris and London, where his second wife whom he called his Penelope (Homer wife’s name, in case you don’t know), had waited for him at home and did a lot of knitting while he was away.

33 years ago, when he came back from his travel, his first wife took a lover in and he was desperate, hurt, angry and jealous. Through the book, he mentioned it here and there, still resentful. Communication during his first travel was hard and for the over 4 month-journey, he was able to dial through twice. His wife told him that she pretended that he was dead. So it was a sad homecoming story for him, as if a soldier coming home and found out that his wife had already taken another man thinking him dead. To his point of view, he was born a writer and he needed to travel to make a living, just like a fisherman had to go out fishing.

I think the reasons he names his book the ghost train are two-folds. One refers back 33 years, when he came home from his trip and felt as if a ghost looking through window where he was treated dead, and was replaced, and where another man occupied his bed, wife and sat at his table drinking coffee and holding his children. Another reason being that traveling in an old age is not noticed as if a ghost traveling among the living.

It was a good book. Among all the places on his itinerary, there were only a few I had traveled alone to

Laughing
