Ski resorts Comment 1/29/2009 18:18
There are 4 new ski Mtns I skiied this season. Before I forgot the details of them, I'll record my experience there and hopefully to be useful to fellow skiers/riders.

[1] Sugarbush
We skiied in Sugarbush on Sunday, Jan 11th. It was an excellent powder day. The fluffy powder is just everywhere. Sugarbush is famous for it's moguls. So, the grooming is not that good. If you want a nice cruiser, this mtn probably is not for you.

The blue trails under the Gatehouse express Quad is good for advanced beginners and intermediate skiers.

Castler Rock Peak has great black diamond trails. I spent most of my time there. If you like challenge, Liftline/Rumble are terrific choices.

On Lincoln Peak, Ripcord is a fun double diamond. Paradise is wide and beautiful.

The left side of the mountain, I only skiied down Steins Run, a double black, which is so so compared to Castlerock peak runs.

Overrall, this is a big mountain with good snow and a lot of options.

[2] Killington, VT

We skiied there on Sat, Jan 17th.

This one claimed to be the "largest" ski resort in New England. However, we feel it's a bit exagerated. It has a large skiable area. however, a lot of them are connection green trails between lifts, which are not fun to ski.

Also, this mountain is famous to be icy, which is not that fun. So, overall, not many good trails for skiers/riders -- from the consensus of 6.

The double blacks in the Bear Mtn are ok. I did like the run in Outer Limits.

The Superstar and Oviation are 2 nice cruisers. a bit icy though.

Killington Peak has some good black runs. Be warned, it's colder than other areas. The tree ski in Bid dipper is not bad.

This is an expensive mountain. Overall, it doesn't worth the money spent there. imho.

[3] Jay Peak, VT

Date: Sun, Jan 18

Jay Peak is right by the Canada border. You will hear a lot of french in the mountain. In fact, about half of the skiers there are from Montreal area. It is about 4 hours drive from Boston

Since it is so far north, it has more snow than most ski areas in New England. The powder is just fatanstic!! Even better than the week before in Sugarbush.

I don't have a map now, I'll update later for the trails.

Agree with you about Sugarbush and Killington.
I wish that I could check out Jay Peak as well.
Waiting for the next one...

[4] Loon Mountain, NH

Date: Sun, Jan 25th.

This is a beautiful mountin, in the middle of White Mountains. The view is just gorgeous.

Ths mountain has some steep runs. However, it lacks good moguls and not much good options on tree skiing. Also, the tree skiing area is hard to find. You need to be exetremely careful to find the entrance to the glades.

On the far left side, the North Peak, the highest point in Loon, it has some good black runs: Flume and Walings Boss. The Bucksaw glades is not bad.

On Loon peak, left side of Big Dipper and the Triple Trouble are set aside as moguls. This trail is not very steep. So, it's good for intermediate skiers to try on moguls. Be warned, there are bare and icy spot in the middle of Triple Trouble, you can't see it before you hit it.

I did like the glades in Mike's way and Skidder. Just wished they have better snow coverage. Maybe this week's snowstormed will cover all the exposed rock and roots.

There a flat chair lift connect lincoln peak to South Peak. I did enjoy the runs in South Peak. A small section of Ripsaw is very steep. A lot of skiers/riders just glide down with so much fear. If you can control in steep run, it is a very FUN trail. If not, Undercut is a nice alternative. Or, take the blue cruiser.

South Peak get more sunshine in the afternoon. If you ski in Loon, I would suggest spend morning in North Peak and Loon Peak. In the afternoon, switch to South Peak, sunshine wise.

BTW, the capacity of it's gondola is small, only 4 person each car. There's a single only line on the right, which moves much faster than the regular line.

[5] Pat's Peak

Monday, Jan 19th.

It is MLK holiday, Pat's peak has POP program on that day. I went to the open house in Museum of Science that morning, and took advantage of the POP in the evening.

There are packs of snow in the trail, thanks to the snowstorm over the weekend. I went for snowboarding instead of ski and got a lot of hard falls.. Under the pack of snow, it's icy. So, ski condition is not optimal.

It is a small mountain. It is good to practice turns and skills.

Overall, I'm satisfied as a beginner snowbarder. I just wish the snow coverage is better.

But I want to add some comments about Pat's Peak. Only during the first year of my ski endeavor did I go to Pat's Peak. The only good thing about it is that it has microwave in its club house that enable you to bring you own food to boycott the over-priced junk sold in every ski resort.

The best time to ski in Pat's Peak is during a normal working day. In other times, if you are a beginner, you run the risk of being hit by other beginners. And there are so many of them, esp. during the weekend evening hours. If you are above the beginner level, you waste too much time on the lift. It is slow, and the montain is small.

This is not a good place for beginner. Given the same price range, you can enjoy much more at Wachusett. And this is definately not a good choice for skiers who is above the green trail level.

Good for snowboard beginning beginner. Not many advanced beginners and that makes falling not so embarrasing. Loads of cheap junk food. Good cell phone signal. happy happy

概括的很好。 牛

我最近去了:Bridger Bowl,Big Sky 和 Moonlight Basin。No waiting line at any lift。

由此进一步加深了对滑雪的认识:危险,费钱,折腾,受罪。

Agree on 费钱,折腾.
But disagree on 受罪..

Neutral on 危险. Nothing is safe in this world. The key is Risk Control wink

Nike, I agree with you on somewhat. But we can approach the Alpine in different ways which is quite safe, cheap, enjoyable and trouble-less.

I found if people keep Green and Blue trails in mind, don't chase the famous, avoid the crowd, positive result could be achieved. At least this is my goal.

Hmm, that reminds of Tuckerman Ravine, which is cheap (FREE!!), enjoyable, trouble-less, no crowd, and safe with so much powder happy happy happy

Last weekends, I have seen the Tuckerman from the Wildcat which claimed to be the best scene ski resort in East coast. maybe it is true.

As Tuckerman also claimed to be most difficult and most famous backcountry in NE, I can go with your guys to find the comfortable zone for me in the future.
