It's all pink -

The decisive moment is a concept from Henri Cartier-Bresson, the acclaimed one of the most important documentary photographers of the 20th century.

I decide to take the opportunity of a birthday party. It is Baobao's 3 year-old birthday and I have not been to the friends' house before. The party is said to start at 4 pm so I know I have about an hour to work with natural light if the situation allows.

I arrive exactly at 4 pm. Walk inside the room and greet with Mom briefly. The rooms are quite dark except Baobao's playing room, where there is one window that invites the light in. A young woman is braiding Baobao's hair. I set to work right away.

For this project, I use a 50mm fixed length - it is my first time to use these lens. Before I come, I have a rough idea of what to do. I have brought with me a watercolor set and a Crayon set to Baobao. It is my idea to introduce the creativity in an early age that is independent from my photo project. So I am aware that I run a risk because watercolor may be too challenge for a 3 year old as it involves using brush and water, instead of simply color and paper. Some professional oil artists have never touched watercolor for its unique challenge. I also got a set of colored Crayons that a child can directly hold that in case the watercolor is impossible.

It turns out that Baobao is such a natural! I open the set, get water and that's it. Baobao simply starts to paint with such confidence as if she is a professional watercolorist - the following photos and the above work prove my claim (where there is no single touch from me). To follow the documentary tradition, I have done the minimum interference, except a little interaction - such as reminding her occasionally to use some water, and gently letting her know the sequence of water, color and then paper.

From 4:10 pm - 5:07pm, I have taken 208 shots, from different angles. And I only need to choose one best that has used every inch of the frame. But it is a challenge and I am not sure there is one great success. But there are sure some pretty good ones.

In retrospect, I realized that due to the left arm injury, I wasn't able to move as fast as I could, because I depend solely on my right arm to lift me up from the ground; and it was impossible for me to lean on my left side. I knew at the moment that if I set or stage Baobao, I may get better lighting and photos. But I chose non-interference but to record. For example, if I turned her around, when she reached paints, her face would be turning toward the light rather than away. (I recognize that this is debatable to others and to me. Next, I may prepare more in advance and may set things up to my advantage - but deeply I prefer letting the child decide and it's great if i get it, but it's still fun if i don't.)

However, non-interference does not mean non-interaction. I think the very natural interaction between Baobao and I made the process seemingly effortless and great fun! And the interaction does not even require many words.
