English as our second language, it is not surprising that we use wrong words often. What we want to avoid is to use a word with the opposite connotation other than what we want to express.

For example, "shock" has a negative connotation. "Astonish", "surprise", "amaze" are more neutral, and they seem to be suitable for both good and bad experiences. And "impress" seems to have a positive connotation.

It's not from me, but from dictionary.

We only need to check the dictionary more often.

虽然这象是一个笑话, 但我日渐反省过来为什么我们第一代中国人到一定位置就升不上去了,因为我们的语言。在高级管理层,更重要的是交流而不是技术。除非你技术到了能够弥补语言欠缺的部分。

上次我一个小时候的最好的朋友来美国,问我好几个词是什么意思,我都说不出来。他后来忍不住说了句:你怎么这些词都不知到什么意思呢?

后来,我反省了一下这可能是擅长语言的人和不擅长的人的区别。他是一个成功的商人,人们于是不会想到其实他日语完美,英语也没问题,会广东话,还会一些德语。我意识到他可能会对词语敏感好学,不象我读了那么多本书,不懂的词很少差字典。

我记录下来是为了给自己一个“记号” - 今后要多查字典。 smile 一起查可能更象游戏好玩一些。

比如说吧,我从小喜欢体育运动,又是一个好的动员人,于是组织体育比赛一般都是我的任务。从来没有问题,可是和美国人打了几次排球,发现问题大了。虽然我总结的原因有好几个,其中自我反省一下就是我们在很短时间的英语问题。我们中文说“往前一点”翻成英文就象命令句,可是对方都要发球了, 来不及说:“Mary, can you please move a little forward?"

这种情况下除了不说话以外,应该怎么说呢?我还是没掌握。我基本上是跟美国人打排球的话,什么都不说,管他的。他们好多人认为前排的人只能站在前排线前(接发球的时候),二传也站在很后边,还说不通。是不是排球在美国不流行啊?

Laughing 这个现象同时发生。

虽然我不是教练,看着那么大空档说一句不听就算了,问题是狠狠地被瞪了一眼 Laughing 。心想美国人也会瞪人啊。知道说不全,现在我是不说话,接不着就接不着。
