support support Very Touching Story! Is BDL a charity?

When I was young, I was extremely shy and timid. In order to avoid even saying hello to my acquaintances on the way home after school, I always chose a far but quiet unpaved road. I suffered so much that I fell into self-hatred because I was helplessly not able to change myself. One afternoon in my freshman year when reading the story how George B. Shaw, an English drama writer who successfully overcame his shyness, I told myself that what a blessing it was to be able to talk with people with confidence!

I decided to follow Shaw as my role model. I forced myself talk more with my roommates and classmates; I gradually began to raise my hand more often to answer and ask class questions. Having been able to open my once-sticky mouth easily, I joined two clubs to further hone public speaking skills. In my junior year, I was elected the class president through a 15-minute public speech. Almost ten years later, I averaged selling one roof each day in three weeks in Midland, Texas by knocking doors, a terrifying sales method even to some native speakers. My story is a proof that life can give you many chances to change, to engage, and to live more joyfully.

When I learned about the Boston Debate League, I got so excited to run a marathon for BDL. This is an organization that is giving kids just those kinds of chances: to change, to engage, and to live more joyfully. Academic research has shown the power of urban debate leagues to connect kids to school and to increase powerfully their chances of graduating and going to college. When you hear these kids debate energy or economic policy, you know they are going places with their lives.

I may not be able to donate thousands of dollars to a charity by myself at this point in my life, but I can run. Your donation will really make a difference. The BDL runs on a lean budget and the money our team raises will allow them to grow the program by as much as 20% to include more kids on existing teams and to bring more Boston-area high schools off the waiting list and into the league.

Please join me in supporting the Boston Debate League as I continue training in the next 40 days, through the New England winter, to cross the finish line and make an incredible impact on this thriving program!

XOXO,

Mai

Boston Debate League

I don't think I will ever have the physical ability to join Marathon.

But I work at Copley Square and will cheer for you guys at finish line.

3 miles
4-5 miles
9 miles
